Montecchio, one of Italy's most beautiful 'borgos'.

NEAR AREA: MONTECCHIO & POZZOCIOLINO

Montecchio is a commune  in the Province of Terni in the Italian region Umbria, located about 70 km south of Perugia and about 30 km northwest of Terni. Montecchio borders the following municipalities: Alviano, Baschi, Civitella del Lago, Guardea, Orvieto, Todi. The production facilities of the Falesco winery are located here and you will find several excellent wineries in the vincinity.

Montecchio also offers several olive oil mills (working from beginning of november until mid december, when the olives are harvested). In the San Lorenzo valley beneath the town, an Etruscan burriing place was found some years ago. It is a nice walk there, however : all artifacts found on the premisses, where transferred to the Guardea and Orvieto museum.

The Bartolomei family (producing olive oil for 4 generations) give you the opportunity to visit their mill and small olive oil museum and have a taste of their excellent products.

GETTING HERE: THE DRIVING DIRECTIONS Rome Ciampino – Montecchio / Villa Del Rio

When leaving the airport of Roma Ciampino, follow the green arrows, direction ring way of Rome or also known as the Grande Raccorde Annulare (short G.R.A.)

From the ring way, you’ll find your way onto the A1, connecting north and south of Italy. Montecchio is situated north of Rome, so follow direction A1 FIRENZE. Before driving onto the highway, take a ticket so you’ll be able to pay toll at the end of your journey.

Once you are on the A1, direction FIRENZE, drive until ATTIGLIANO. Toll charges are, depending whether you entered A1 at Roma Est or Roma Nord.

Once you’ve paid your toll, leave the highway and take a left, following direction Attigliano, Alviano, Bomarzo, … Keep following this street and keep a left in order to cross the highway A1 over a bridge. Next there’s another bridge crossing the Tiber river, after which you take a right, following direction Orvieto, Castiglione in Teverina and Civitella del Lago. Now you keep on driving straight ahead following this street (It might seem a very long distance, depending on your speed, it will take 20 to 40 minutes, always on the same road) You will only come across one village on this road called Graffignano once you’ve passed under a very narrow bridge.

After a while, you can see an arrow in the distance, direction ALVIANO. Take a right here and again follow the road. You will pass the villages ALVIANO SCALO and MADONNA DEL PORTO. After driving through Madonna Del Porto you will come across arrows direction MONTECCHIO and GUARDEA after a few minutes. Follow these and take a right.

You are now driving a smaller, curvy road which passes through the smallervillage of POZZOCIOLINO, which is part of Montecchio. Once you reach the top of the road, take a left, and at the next section, immediately take a right towards Montecchio.

Now you have two possibilities

-       Follow this road straight ahead and drive into MONTECCHIO. After about 2 kilometers (you’ve passed a gas station on the left and an olive oil cooperative on the right) take a sharp right, following direction Montecchio. This road goes up very steeply, passing by the Carabinieri up to the villages main town square, Piazza Garibaldi. Take a right onto Via C. Battisti.

-       After a little less than one kilometer, the road you’re following makes a bend (about 90°) to the right. Do NOT follow this bend, but take the small en steep downhill street right in front of you between two small, older buildings and a signpost with three traffic signs. (10 %, max 1,5 Ton en max 30). This is Via del Rio or Via del Monastero, drive down up to number 3, the second house on your left.

OR

-       Right after passing the bridge, take the steep uphill street on the right following CARNANO/PRANZUTO. After a few hundred meters you will arrive at a T-section. Left is a dead end, so take a right and drive through the residential area. Keep following this road an pass two intersections.

You know you’ve arrived at the correct location, when you see a small parking spot on your right hand side next to a tree with a brown gate across the street.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS MONTECCHIO Via de Autostrade A1 from north MILAAN – BOLOGNA – FIRENZE – Exit ORVIETO

This road will cost you about 30 € in toll. (Your credit card makes it easy to pay if you follow the blue arrows on the ground, cutting short the waiting at the toll booths)

You are on the A1 and drive until exit ORVIETO. From this exit, it is exactly 20 kilometers untill you’ve reached the villa.

After paying your toll, take a left following TODI – BASCHI – TERNI – NARNI. Follow this road with the highway on your left side and the railway on your right. The road will also take you across the highway a little further on.

After you’ve passed the bridge and crossed the A1, keep following the road (it takes a small right turn) following BASCHI – MONTECCHIO. De highway is now on your right side.

In the small town of Baschi, keep following this road which will now also direct you to AMELIA. In Baschi you will come across a gas station on your left and a town square on your right. When leaving the village, take a look to your right: There’s a marvellous view of the medeaval part of Baschi, situated on a large rock.

Continu driving on the SS205 until you reach a T-section (maybe describing it as a Y-section is better) Keep left here following TODI – MONTECCHIO (this is still the SS205). Taking a right would lead you to Alviano and Attigliano, which is nice of course, but not the destination you are looking for right now.

After a few last kilometers you will see directions to MONTECCHIO. Take left here.
